Through our traveling exhibitions program, we are able to share original exhibitions created by the museum. Our landmark photography exhibition, Distant Echoes, is about the experiences of black farmers in America and has been traveling to museums all over the United States. We also have an active program of loaning smaller, banner exhibitions developed for our Maryland Community Space gallery to area schools, libraries, visitor centers and other interested institutions.

Distant Echoes: Black Farmers in America

Distant Echoes: Black Farmers in America features the work of world-renowned photojournalist John Francis Ficara. This special exhibition depicts the lives and working conditions of farmers who are slowly disappearing from the American landscape. Comprised of nearly 60 images, the exhibition captures signs of adversity and endurance, poverty and self-determination. Ficara’s photographic essay includes African American farmers from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Michigan who battle with economics and discrimination. Crop, cattle, chicken, sugarcane, dairy and tobacco farmers are highlighted as the exhibition follows them through daily struggles and triumphs. Co-curated by Margaret A. Hutto and Nona R. Martin.
