The Lewis is Bringing Jacob Lawrence to Baltimore

Maryland Collectors Partner with the Lewis Museum on New Exhibition

Baltimore, Maryland, August 4, 2017 - The Reginald F. Lewis Museum is excited to officially announce its new exhibition – Maryland Collects: Jacob Lawrence; over 50 prints by artist Jacob Lawrence from personal collections in and around Maryland. The exhibition will be on display starting September 9th and will run through January 7th 2018. Maryland Collects: Jacob Lawrence will be wrapped in a host of programs and events focusing on families, collectors, artists and those seeking to simply add more history and culture to their lives through a visit to the Lewis.

Jacob Lawrence, one of the best known artists of the 20th century, was a painter, storyteller and educator who is renowned for his portrayals of African American life, especially in Harlem. His prints reflect vivid colors and simplicity of form. Wanda Draper, Executive Director of the Lewis Museum, is “excited about the generosity of our Maryland collectors. We had many offers for the exhibition that we had to turn away because we didn’t have room. This is more proof that Lawrence is a tremendously popular artist and that many in the State feel that this exhibit and the Lewis are worthy of supporting. We know that this exhibition is a must-see!”

Maryland Collects: Jacob Lawrence opens to the public on Saturday, September 9th at 10:00am. We will be hosting special previews for the press, members and donors prior to the 9th.
