Kwanzaa Celebration 2017

Saturday, December 30, 12 pm- 4 pm

Celebrate this annual African American holiday with African dance, storytelling, drumming performances, workshops and traditional crafts using fiber art.  Hear elder and quilter Joan Gaither discuss the African American histories documented in her story quilts from the exhibit, Freedom: Emancipation Quilted & Stitched. Presenters include Sankofa Dance Theater, author food nutritionist Tambra Raye Stevenson from I Am and community artist Sallah Jenkins.

Floor 1: Flex Room    Kwanzaa Crafts with Sallah Jenkins

Noont to 4 pm                 Create a mkeka (mat) using fabric, printmaking

                                      and  Adinkra symbols.


Floor 1: LewisNow!    Freedom: Emancipation  Quilted and Stitched

1:30 pm & 2:30 pm     Join quilter Joan Gaither for a gallery walk on

                                       her story quilts embracing people of color.


Floor 1: Classroom 112     African Marketplace (continues)

Noon to 4pm



Floor 2: Upper Lobby      African Marketplace

Noon to 4pm        Shop for afrocentric products and support our vendors with

      (Ujamma- Cooperative Economics).

Floor 2: Theater      

                                            Video Presentation: Dr. Malauna Karenga (60 min)

12:30pm to 1:30 pm            In place of Dr. Karenga’s cancelled visit, one

                                            of  his 2016 Kwanzaa talks will be screened.


2pm / 3:15pm              Sankofa Dance Theater: Invoked, Called by

                                           the Ancestors (African dancing, drumming and spoken word.)

                                        .  Closing Kwanzaa ceremony at  3 pm show.



Floor 4: Resource Center      Genealogy: Tracing Family Roots

Noon to 4 pm                           Search your family genealogy with Dr. Hollie.


Floor 4: DL Classroom  Video:KT and Me: A Kwanzaa Family Special (45 min)

Floor 4: Boardroom Celebrating Kwanzaa in the Kitchen with I Am WANDA.Org

1:30 pm                                   Celebrate African Heritage foods over the holidays  with Women

                                                Advancing Nutrition, Dietetics and Agriculture(WANDA)


Floor 4: Commons      Percussion Workshop for Kids by Sankofa Dance Theater

2:30 pm   Create polyrhythmic music with the drummers of Sankofa.
